My client on the out skirts of Shrewsbury is looking for an enthusiastic Horticultural apprentice to join their already established grounds team.

The working hours will be Monday to Friday 8.00 – 16.30pm with half hour lunch and two 15 mins breaks. This is an apprenticeship, and you will have someone come to site to assess your work and make sure you are completing the written documents necessary. This apprenticeship could be finished in 18 months, or it could take up to 24 all depends on the individual.

In this role you will develop core skills in grounds maintenance, as well as specialist skills in either horticulture or landscaping. You will maintain all green spaces and gardens. You will be trained to use a variety of tools and machinery relevant to your role.

  • assisting in the propagation of plants
  • gardening duties, including digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, strimming, edging, pruning, leaf clearing, bed preparation and planting
  • attending to plants under glass
  • grass cutting
  • assisting in the development of wildlife in the gardens and grounds
  • reporting faults and damage to machinery to the Grounds Manager
  • identifying hazards and reporting to the Health and Safety Officer
  • assisting with car parking duties for events (along with other teams)
  • keeping borders, thoroughfares and footpaths clear and free from weeds and litter always.
  • pedestrian groundwork
  • border maintenance
  • using grounds and garden machinery and equipment within safety guidelines, and cleaning and safely securing the same after each use
  • safe use of pesticides
  • such other duties as instructed by the Grounds Manager and Grounds Supervisor.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Trustworthy and reliable.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work using own initiative and without supervision.
  • Physically fit, as work is manual.
  • Energetic.
